CSA Share Notes Aug 13, 2026
Finally, the late plantings are here! We’ve got gorgeous squash, cukes, zucchini, and the green beans are getting really close. We see loads of teensy baby beans on them, so we hope to have bushels of them soon.
We are still thinking we will have nice harvests all the way to the end of August. Then if we’re lucky it’s quite possible we’ll be able to just jump right into the Fall CSA season. It’ll really help if we get relief from the heat sometime soon. Today was the hottest “feels like” of the year so far out here at Red Moon Farm: 111! We’re eagerly awaiting the first cool front- even if it just drops it 8 or 10 degrees, it’ll be sweet relief.
Did you join the fall CSA yet? There’s still room!
Here’s this week’s vegetable line-up:
Cucumber — 2 types: slicers and picklers. All are delicious eaten fresh. We’re elated to succeed with this crop this time of year!
Eggplant — Remember: high heat coking methods! Grill, griddle, or oven, get a little char on it, and it’s so delicious! These plants are tired, so we’re not getting as much out of them but I’ll betcha you’re ready for a break from eggplant. Large shares received Italian Barbarella and our beautiful tiny fairytale eggplant. Regular shares received 2 mixed Italian types, and a couple of long Japanese. Mini shares received long Japanese.
Okra — A nice portion for everyone this week. This heirloom Hill Country Red was developed in Kerrville Texas and it so fantastic. Even the large pods stay deliciously tender. Okra goes bad very quickly, so make a plan to use this up within the next couple of days. We recommend roasting or grilling. High heat is the way to go!
Bell Peppers — Everyone received a few bell peppers
Sweet Peppers — Large shares received a big ‘ol handful of our new sweet pepper variety: Lunchbox Peppers. They’re petite and sweet. If you let them fully ripen for a week or so in the fridge, you’ll start to see them change their colors to red, orange, and yellow, but they’re delicious when they’re green, too.
Hot Peppers — Loads for everyone- both cayenne, and jalapenos. If the heat is too much for you, this is a perfect item to gift, or start a batch of pepper vinegar to dress up your collard greens in the traditional southern way later this fall!
Squash — loads for everyone!
Zucchini — a nice portion for all!
Onions — We’re at the very end of this crop. This will probably be our final week for onions
Veggie Storage tips:
Counter storage: Onions. Store your basil bouquet style, in a fresh glass of water. Trim the stem every couple of days and enjoy fresh basil leaves all week.
Fridge storage: Cucumbers, peppers, squash/zucchini, eggplant, okra. Seal them up in a bag or container to retain moisture for longest storage life
Everything wants to be washed well before cooking, but keep the dirt on till then, to prevent faster spoilage.
We’d love to hear stories and recipes of your culinary adventures this week. Tag us on Instagram or Facebook, showing us how you’ve used your CSA share.
